“The Title says it all. The Continuous Improvement System offers a way for teachers and administrators to ‘behave’ their way into creating substantial reform in how they gather and use student achievement data. School improvement is a dynamic and responsive process and this system is designed to meet those challenges.” Cindy Daly, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Paradise Valley Unified School District, Paradise Valley, AZ.

Dr. Fred Skoglund, www.vikingsolutions.net , will be leading and facilitating AZ ASCD’s Spring Workshop at Grand Canyon University this March 2012. This seminar will be of benefit to K-12 district level administrators charged with school improvement responsibilities, principals, district and school level professional development personnel and teachers who are recognized as leaders in their schools.

Participants will gain information, engage in hands-on activities and receive documents that are critical to the implementation of the Continuous Improvement System. This system has consistently created a culture of high expectations and high levels of performance for both educators and students. Emphasis is placed on the collaborative efforts of instructional teams.

The effectiveness of this system lies in its simplicity and common-sense approach to teaching and learning. The CIS easily produces real-time data that allows the principal and the school leadership team to monitor the performance of the school as a whole; or break down the data to reflect accurate illustrations each grade level/subject, each classroom and each student. With this system, the principal and school leaders are able to engage in dialogue that enhances the curriculum, instruction, assessment and accountability aspects of the teaching and learning process.

I am proud to announce that Dr. Fred Skoglund is our featured presenter for AZ ASCD’s Spring Professional Development Seminar on March 28th, at Grand Canyon University in McKinley Hall. Dr. Skoglund is highly respected by educators and administrators state-wide. He is the author of Student Success: How To Make It Happen and the founder and president of Viking Solutions, a consulting firm dedicated to enhancing educator performance and elevating student achievement. He is the creator of the Continuous Improvement System (CIS).

Dr. Skoglund has worked with many schools in Arizona training their campuses in the CIS approach. Dr. Dave McNeil, Director of Assessment, Accountability and Research in the Scottsdale Unified School District, was introduced to CIS as an Assistant Principal in 2002. He states, “It immediately gave our leadership team the tools to move an organization forward and keep change manageable.” Dr. McNeil became Principal of Washington Elementary School in 2005 and again reached out to Dr. Skoglund and his CIS approach because, “Fred and his framework was what this school and I needed in order to find success for the staff and children. The CIS broke down the many barriers involved in changing the culture of a school and putting a vision of excellence in place.”

Dr. McNeil further explains, “[The CIS framework] takes the focus away from the trivial day to day ‘stuff’ and placing it on the most important components, teaching and learning. As a school, we grew professionally and personally to maximize our capacity which in turn resulted in higher achievement for kids. Washington as well as I are blessed that Fred and his CIS was available to help the Washington community find success. Today as I am no longer at Washington Elementary School, but the framework still stands strong as Washington remains to reap the benefits of our journey together.”

We at AZ ASCD extend our invitation to administrators and educators and all those in supporting roles serving our children in educational settings to join us on March 28, 2012 at Grand Canyon University to share Fred’s CIS framework and make a positive difference on your campus(es).

Educationally,

He brings a plethora of knowledge and experience to us with a focus on developing, implementing, and sustaining Common Core State Standards. Participants will take away effective, powerful strategies and a new understanding of what it looks like to implement and sustain Common Core Standards.
Educators and administrators also sharing their expertise at our October 20th Fall Conference are: Dr. Betz Frederick, ASCD Program Development Consultant, Dr. Frederic Skoglund, co-author of Student Success: How to Make it Happen, Mr. Eric Brooks, Arizona Department of Education – Education Program Specialist, and Ms. Suzi Mast, Arizona Department of Education – Mathematics/Science Education Program Specialist.
We look forward to this exciting opportunity to contribute to our Arizona educators in building their professional capacity. Bring a colleague or two and enjoy a day of empowerment, effective strategies that target specific topics and needs of today’s educators; all in a day of productive fun!
